2024 in Books + Quotes

Maybe go make a cup of tea, fetch some cookies… It’s fun to celebrate mundane moments like reading a blog post with a special warm tea to sip in the meantime...

If you’re looking for something new to read next year, I hope this small list inspires you… I also added one favourite passage from each book because I do love quotes.

Favourite passage

“I dream with my eyes open.”

January
Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne

I started the year reading this book because I knew I was moving to Iceland soon (in February actually) this book is not for everyone but I do love detailed adventures that may even give you solid advice on how to survive out there may you ever be in an apocalyptic scenario…

Favourite passage

“Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing”

February
The Portrait of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

I already knew a lot about the story before reading the book but it did not ruin my experience whatsoever! How a simple realisation can change the course of life left me staring at nothing for a long time after finishing this book…

Favourite passage

“Beautiful and brutal was the nature they lived in.”

June
Shuna’s Journey by Hayao Miyazaki

The watercolour art is nostalgic, the love story is beautiful and the message is very important. A must read, a must have.

Favourite passage

‘What's your name,' Coraline asked the cat. 'Look, I'm Coraline. Okay?'

'Cats don't have names,' it said.

'No?' said Coraline.

'No,' said the cat. 'Now you people have names. That's because you don't know who you are. We know who we are, so we don't need names.

August
Coraline by Neil Gaiman

It’s funny because I was thinking about watching the movie that same week and then destiny put the book first…

If you like funny characters and cosy vibes with a spooky atmosphere this book is for you!

I read it in one go after lunch enjoying a typical summer day as one does: reading.

I was even inspired to draw a short comic after that

Favourite passage

“I don’t know what’s worse: to not know what you are and be happy, or to become what you’ve always wanted to be, and feel alone.”

August
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes

I cried with this one…

The day I was reading Coraline (we can read at work) a professor of the school was passing by and saw the book on a table… He instantly asked who was reading it. It was me :   ) a few hours later he showed up with a copy of Flowers for Algernon for me to read.

Did I just made a friend?

I love when books end up in your hands like this…

Favourite passage

‘‘I tell myself that the things i’m undecided on were never that important anyway. There are only so many important things you can compromise on, right?’’ - Shima Sousuke

September
Skip to Loafer by Misaki Takamatsu

It became my favourite manga and anime and even though other animes might be better in so many levels… This one checks all the boxes. It’s deep, cosy, funny, kind, endlessly optimistic, goal driven…

Seriously, if you need a laugh just give it a go

Favourite passage

“Perhaps that is what it is like being with other people. Perhaps even people you like and admire immensely can make you see the World in ways you would rather not.“

November
Piranesi by Susana Clarke

This was a buddy read with my boyfriend which I highly enjoyed because we have very different views of the world and this book is exactly about that as well. After finishing I spent at least one entire week going back to it, reading other people’s opinions online, trying to understand what should I believe… This book is beautiful. It’s a story about living in the present because the past is nonexistent. Piranesi turned out to be an example for me to follow

Well, your turn :   )

What books have you read this year that you think I absolutely should read, too?

I would love to know your suggestions.

Please leave them as comments to inspire others as well, or share them with me in private if you prefer

Have a wonderful end of the year, kiss the ones you love - yes, you can kiss a picture.

And enter 2025 smiling :   )
